With Show this field only when…, a question shows up only for people who gave a specific earlier answer. The form stays short for those who don't need the question and complete for those who do. The example in this article is the assessment form of ClÃnica Vitta, an aesthetics clinic in Miami.
Where to turn it on
In Forms › (form) › Edit › "Fields" card, open the field that should only appear sometimes and turn on Show this field only when…. The first condition appears, in three parts:
- Field — the question this one depends on. Only fields above this one are listed: that is what the person has already answered when they get here.
- Comparison — depends on the type of the chosen field (see below).
- Value — the option or number to compare. It does not show for was answered and was not answered.
On Vitta's form, the field "Which procedure have you had?" gets the condition "Have you ever had an aesthetic procedure?" is equal to Yes. Whoever answers No never sees it.
In the editor, the field gets the Conditional badge. If the toggle is locked, there is no field with an answer above this one: move the field down or add the source question before it.
All or any condition
Use Add condition to combine up to 10 conditions. From the second one on, Show when appears:
- all conditions are true — the field only shows if every condition holds at the same time.
- any condition is true — one is enough.
At Vitta, "Tell us more about your health" uses any condition: "Are you pregnant or breastfeeding?" is equal to Yes or "Do you take blood thinners?" is equal to Yes. With all, it would only show to people who answered Yes to both.
Each comparison and where it appears
- Single choice, Dropdown and Yes or no — is equal to and is not, with the value picked from the field's options.
- Multiple choice — includes and does not include. E.g. "Have you used botulinum toxin before?" shows when "Interests" includes Botulinum toxin, even if other options were checked too.
- Scale from 0 to 10, Stars, Number and Amount — is equal to, is greater than and is less than, with a typed number. E.g. "What went wrong?" shows when "Rating of your last visit" is less than 3.
- Any field with an answer — was answered and was not answered. It is the only option for the other types (text, email, date, ID document, Matrix, Hidden field and so on).
Two details that often raise questions:
- is not and does not include are also true when the question was left blank. If "Which procedure have you had?" is optional and the person skips it, a condition is not Fillers is true.
- is greater than and is less than are never true for an empty field: empty is neither greater nor smaller than anything.
Display blocks (Text block, Video and Section divider) cannot be a source, since they have no answer, but they can have a condition: you can show a notice only to people who checked "pregnant". The Hidden field is the opposite: it can be a source (with was answered or was not answered), but it has no condition, because nobody sees it.
The answer of a hidden field
- A hidden required field does not block submission. "Which procedure have you had?" can be required: it is only required from people who see it.
- What was typed and then hidden is discarded. If the person answered Yes, filled in the procedure and then switched to No, that field arrives blank.
- The chain is respected. A hidden field counts as not answered for fields that depend on it. If "Which procedure" is hidden, a third field depending on it stays hidden too.
- The response PDF leaves the question out, because it was never asked to that person.
In steps
In a form set to In steps, conditions work the same inside each step. If conditions hide every question in a step, the step is skipped: someone who checked no procedure goes straight from "Your details" to "Consent", without an empty step in between.
Careful when editing
- Deleting the source field also removes the conditions that pointed to it. The dependent field goes back to always showing: check that this is what you want.
- Moving a field above its source makes the condition invalid, and the editor asks you to choose a field that comes before it.
- Turning the toggle off deletes that field's conditions.
- Conditions are part of the draft: respondents only get them after you Publish.
Where to go next
- Thank-you page and redirect (Appearance and after submission collection) — send each person to a different address based on the answer, with the same comparisons.
- Steps, theme and logo (Appearance and after submission collection) — split the form into steps with the Section divider.
- Field types (Fields collection) — what each type accepts.
- Matrix, video and hidden field (Fields collection) — where the Hidden field value comes from.
In short: turn on Show this field only when… in the field, pick a field above it, the comparison and the value, and combine up to 10 conditions with "all" or "any"; a hidden field is not required, arrives blank, is left out of the PDF and hides the fields that depend on it, and steps left with no questions are skipped.
