Notifications: alerts in-app, email, browser and WhatsApp

4 min read15

Notifications are how WiseData Finances tells you what matters without you having to open the system all the time: an expense coming due, income to receive, a budget that's been exceeded. You decide what you want to receive and where — and you can adjust it at any time.

There are two parts that complement each other: the notification center (where alerts are kept) and the notification preferences (where you choose the types and channels).

The notification center

The bell icon at the top of the system shows recent alerts and how many are still unread. Clicking it — or opening the Notifications page — shows the full list, with three supporting panels:

  • Summary — total notifications, how many are unread and how many are already read, plus a count by type.

  • Filters — by status (read / unread), by type (expense due, expense overdue, income due, income overdue, budget exceeded) and by period (start and end date).

  • List — each alert shows the title, the message and the date. You can mark as read one by one, mark all as read at once or clear all.

In-app alerts are just the history of what happened. To change whether and where you're notified, go to the preferences.

Notification preferences

Under Settings → Notification preferences, you'll find a types × channels table. Each row is a type of alert; each column is a channel. Just turn the crossing you want on or off — the change is saved automatically, with no save button.

The channels

  • Email — the alert arrives in your inbox.

  • In-app — the alert appears in the bell and in the notification center.

  • Browser — a push notification, which shows up even with the system closed. It must be enabled per device (see below).

  • WhatsApp — an external channel, configured in its own section. When active, it fires alongside the channels above.

By default, Email and In-app come on; Browser comes off, because it depends on your permission on the device.

The types

  • Expenses coming due — reminders 3 days before, on the due date and when the expense is overdue.

  • Income coming due — notice of income to receive and overdue.

  • Budget exceeded — when a category goes over the month's budget.

In the business (company) space, type-specific alerts also appear, such as the monthly company report and the loan installment reminders. Each space shows only the types that make sense for it.

Example: you want to be alerted of expenses coming due by email and browser, but you don't want email when a budget is exceeded — you'd rather see it only inside the app. Just leave the Email and Browser columns on for the “Expenses coming due” row; and on the “Budget exceeded” row, turn on only “In-app”. Done — each type follows its own path.

Locked types or channels

Some types and the WhatsApp channel depend on your plan. When an item requires a higher plan, it appears with a lock and indicates which plan unlocks it — for example, WhatsApp becomes available from the PRO plan. When you upgrade, the item is unlocked automatically.

Enabling browser notifications

On the types card, there's an “Enable on this device” button. When you click it, the browser asks for permission; accepting it, this device starts receiving push notifications. Since the permission is per device and per browser, you enable it on each one you use.

A few important points:

  • On iPhone/iPad, you first need to add the app to the home screen to be able to receive push.

  • If you've already denied permission before, the button shows that and there's a tutorial showing how to re-enable it in the browser settings.

  • To stop receiving on a device, use “Disable” in the same place.

Setting up WhatsApp

Just below the table there's a WhatsApp card. Turn the button on, enter the contact name and the phone number that will receive the messages and click Save WhatsApp. The phone is required to enable the channel. From then on, the types you keep active also arrive via WhatsApp, alongside the other channels. WhatsApp is available from the PRO plan.

Alerts that always arrive

Some messages are essential and do not appear in the preferences table — they are always sent by email. That's the case for account and security messages (welcome, email confirmation, password reset) and billing messages (payment approved or declined). They don't depend on the chosen channels precisely because they're critical.

Tip

Start by keeping the essentials in-app and by email and, if you track your finances on your phone, enable WhatsApp for the due-date reminders. That way you won't miss a payment even without opening the system.
