Accounts and transfers: track balances and move money

3 min read4

Accounts are the foundation of WiseData Finances β€” they're where your money sits and where every entry flows through. If you haven't created one yet, start with the Getting started guide. Here we focus on what comes next: tracking balances, viewing each account's statement and transferring money between them.

The accounts overview

On the Accounts page you see all your accounts in a table, with the initial balance, the current balance and the status (active or inactive). It's your big picture: at a glance, how much is in each place.

Positive and negative balances are highlighted β€” making it easy to spot, for example, an account in the red or a card's bill.

An account's statement

Click an account to open its details. At the top, the system shows the current balance; below, the statement with all movements, grouped by day and with the total for each date.

Each movement shows the description, the category and the amount β€” money in appears in green and money out in red. The statement brings together everything that touched that account: expenses you paid, income you received and transfers. You can adjust the period to look only at the range you care about.

Transfers between accounts

A transfer is how you move money from one of your accounts to another β€” for example, from checking to savings. It's important to understand that it is neither income nor an expense: your total net worth doesn't change, the money just moves places. That's why transfers are kept separate from entries.

How to transfer

  1. In the menu, open Transfers and click New transfer.

  2. Choose the source account (where it comes from) and the destination account (where it goes). They must be different. Each account shows its balance next to it, to help you decide.

  3. Enter the amount, the date (already filled with today) and a description (at least 3 characters).

  4. Confirm. Both balances update instantly: the source goes down and the destination goes up.

If you don't have accounts yet, the Create now shortcut appears so you can create one without leaving the screen.

Example: you want to set aside $500 for a trip. Make a transfer from "Chase checking" to "Savings", amount $500, description "Trip fund". Checking drops $500 and savings rises $500 β€” and your total stays the same.

The transfers list

The Transfers screen shows the history of everything you moved between accounts, with filters to find a specific transfer. Each transfer can be edited when needed.

Tip

Use transfers to mirror in the system what you actually do at the bank: when you send money from your account to savings or a card, record the transfer. That way your WiseData Finances balances match reality β€” and your reports and cash flow stay reliable.
